Koh Phi Phi – Idyllic islands in the land of smiles

Phi Phi Islands

In summer time, many people would like to find somewhere for a relaxing holiday. One of the best choices is Phi Phi Islands. Koh Phi Phi is famed for its pristine beaches and has been ranked in the top ten islands in the world for its beauty.

In the past, fishermen called the island “Pu-Lau-Pi-Ar-Pi”. Pu-Lua means island and Pi-Ar-Pi is a local word meaning ‘mangrove’. Afterwards, Pi-Ar-Pi was slightly distorted to Pi-Pi until eventually it became known as Phi Phi.

Phi Phi archipelago comprises a group of 6 islands: Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Lay, Bamboo Island, Mosquito Island, Bida Nai and Bida Nok. Each of these islands has its own character and activities such as snorkeling and feeding fish at Monkey Beach, swimming, snorkeling and relaxing with colorful tropical fish at Maya Bay, where the movie The Beach was shot, and sightseeing at Bida Island, Loh Samah Bay, Pileh Bay and Viking Cave to experience crystal clear waters.

Koh Phi Phi Activities

A journey up to the top view point

The viewpoint sits at an elevation of 180m. If you’re feeling energetic, it’s a brisk 20 minute walk; if not, you can have a leisurely 30 minute stroll to the top. When you arrive at the top, you can see Phi Phi Ley and all of both Tonsai and Loh Dalum bays. From there you will be able to appreciate the amazing shape of the island and marvel at its beauty. The best time to go from a photography point of view is before 10am as the sun will be behind you, bringing out the color of the sea. Another good time is at sunset, when the view is indescribable.

Diving and Snorkeling

Diving and snorkeling in the Phi Phi islands is an experience not to be missed. You will feel like being on a fantasy planet: the locations and sights are both plentiful and astounding. There are plenty of diving and snorkeling points: Pi Leh Bay, Bamboo Island, Mosquito Island, Hin Klang, Shark Point, King Cruiser Wreck, Koh Bida Nok & Kok Bida Nai and Maya Bay.

Rock Climbing

This is a good choice for anyone who likes a challenge. Phi Phi might possibly be the best place to learn how to climb, if not the most scenic, though it is Phi Phi’s neighbour, Railay Beach, to be renowned for its climbing scene.

Cliff Jumping

This activity is fairly new to Tonsai Bay. There are cliffs from 6 to 16m that are ideal for cliff jumping due to the depth of water below. The limestone cliffs of Phi Phi Island are the perfect backdrop for fantastic cliff jump sites. However, to throw oneself off a cliff is a real test of one’s nerves and adrenaline.

Kayaking

Paddling around Phi Phi in a two-person kayak is a great way to see the island’s dramatic features up close and personal – just you, a friend, and nature’s many wonders.

Boat Tours

Add to that the three different choices of boat, longtail, speedboat and cruiser/ferry, and the tours are usually half day or full day so you have a multitude of options. Whichever tour you join you’re guaranteed stunning scenery and it will provide a good opportunity to relax and explore.

Although the Phi Phi Islands were affected by the tsunami three years ago, they have made a full recover. Many tourists keep coming back again and again, and though this is god for the local trade, there is a need to protect the islands’ environment continually. Remember this is not someone else’s responsibility; everyone has a duty to protect and conserve the islands, as there is no natural disaster that can do as much damage as mankind.
